Searching for medical supplies, Remmy and Knockoff explore an abandoned toy store and come to terms with Mr. Fitch’s claims about Neysa.
Sometime, somehow, in a place that defies the word ‘somewhere…’ Remmy Higgins—that woe-be-gone art-school-dropout—got himself lost. Hunted by apparitions of his troubled past and the insect god who feeds on them, Remmy just wants to make it through this liminal hell. But how do you go forward in this place where stopped clocks are always right? Remmy must either find an answer to this question…or spend an eternity, lost and wandering through “the Backrooms.”

EPISODE 4: GIRL TOYS
Scene 1: Inside a Toy Store
REMMY:
Oh my god…well, it isn’t a hospital but…maybe enough kids wiped out in Toys R Us back in the day that they’ll have some decent first aid stuff on hand…
KNOCKOFF:
SIGNS POINT TO YES.
REMMY:
I really hope so…my arm is throbbing…I don’t understand how his jaw could be so strong…it feels like I got hit by a baseball bat.
KNOCKOFF:
ASK AGAIN LATER:
REMMY:
Yeah…I wouldn’t know how to answer that one either.
[Remmy walks through the empty toy store. He plays with various toys.]
REMMY:
Hey, they got a bunch of old weird electronic handhelds! Oh god, look at this…
KNOCKOFF:
MY REPLY IS NO.
REMMY:
What, you don’t want to see your, uh…cousins, haha?
KNOCKOFF:
BETTER NOT TELL YOU NOW.
REMMY:
Hey, we might be able to find your original model, or…whatever you’re based off of, I guess?
KNOCKOFF:
VERY DOUBTFUL.
REMMY:
Yeah…yeah, you’re probably right.
God…none of its dusty…it all looks like it was hung up yesterday other than that faded packaging…
‘’Hey! Mom! Buy me a nerf gun!’’ Haha…
KNOCKOFF:
MY REPLY IS NO.
MY REPLY IS NO.
REMMY:
But I really want one!
KNOCKOFF:
ASK AGAIN LATER.
REMMY:
Okay, but I’m holding you to that…
[Remmy keeps walking]
REMMY:
Oh god…Jesus look, it’s just a wash of pink pink pink and then…robots, fire, race cars…god, I forgot it used to be like this…what do you think this is from, ‘95, ‘96?
KNOCKOFF:
REPLY HAZY, TRY AGAIN.
REMMY:
…definitely not into the 2000s, right?
KNOCKOFF:
REPLY HAZY, TRY AGAIN.
REMMY:
…oh…I see what you mean…yeah, yeah I guess toy aisles still really do look like this today, huh?
KNOCKOFF:
SIGNS POINT TO YES.
REMMY:
I guess I wouldn’t really know…you know…I don’t remember the last time I walked down a toy aisle…
That’s the kind of thing my, uh…peers…in art school would’ve done…just fawning over the designs, the colors…the sheer muscle memory of pulling toys off the wall. I dunno…I guess I’m just speculating. I never really let myself do those things in art school…
KNOCKOFF:
YES.
REMMY:
…my sister, Neysa…she used to hate this shit…I used to legitimately think my Mom was gonna get a leash to stop her from running down to all the Lego Harry Potter stuff…I don’t know why… I mean, it wasn’t like Neysa, didn’t play with Barbie or cooking stuff, or…I don’t know, all the stuff they give girls…she loved Easy Bake oven shit when she was little…but she also just…she just lit up when she could get away and see all the Star Wars toys, the superhero stuff…she hated all this kind of stuff so much…If she used to get mad, my Mom used to say she was “seeing pink” instead of “seeing red”…
KNOCKOFF:
YES, DEFINITELY.
REMY:
Hey…about Neysa…I don’t know why Fitch said all that shit he said, but…I don’t know….I guess he was just always kind of cruel….
KNOCKOFF:
SIGNS POINT TO YES.
REMMY:
I….hey, um…Neysa…Neysa….she didn’t make it out of high school, okay?
KNOCKOFF:
[Silence]
REMMY:
Did you hear me?
KNOCKOFF:
YES.
REMMY:
…Yeah….I, uh…I guess you not responding is actually pretty smart when all you can say is “Cannot Predict Now” and shit…
KNOCKOFF:
YES, DEFINITELY.
REMMY:
Heh…I…honestly kind of appreciate the silence…it’s a hell of a lot better than what most people usually offer as sympathy…
Yeah…I guess I don’t really want to talk about it…I just…I respect your opinion…and I wanted you to know that Fitch was full of shit….
KNOCKOFF:
AS I SEE IT, YES.
REMMY:
…Thank you….you know, sometimes I wish you could say more, but…
Right now…I’m actually really thankful you can say what you can…and that’s it….
KNOCKOFF:
DON’T COUNT ON IT.
REMMY:
Oh shit…oh shit, that’s right! The other games! I completely forget when Fitch showed up!
[Remmy sits down, clearing a bunch of toys out of the way]
REMMY:
Alright, alright, what do we have here?! Solitaire, 8-Ball (of course)….some kind of asteroids or Space Invaders knockoff, I think…oh, and here’s 20 Questions! Yes!
KNOCKOFF:
YOU THINK YOU’RE BEING CLEVER!
REMMY:
Oh my god…oh my god, yes! Hey man! Yes! YES!
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT AN ANIMAL?
REMMY:
Oh…oh yeah…”you think you’re being clever…” that’s one of the stock responses in these old 20 questions games, isn’t it?
KNOCKOFF:
YOU THINK YOU’RE BEING CLEVER!
REMMY:
Yeah…but I used to own something like this…usually that happens when you, like, think you’ve stumped it or something, doesn’t it? But you just chose to say it…you really…you really are…in there…aren’t you?
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT AN ANIMAL?
REMMY:
You, uh…you really wanna play? I mean…I mean, I don’t really have anything…picked out…
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT AN ANIMAL?
REMMY: [thoughtfully]
….No…
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT A MINERAL?
REMMY:
I mean, probably not, right?
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT A VEGETABLE?
REMMY:
Wow, you, uh…you’re really going through the 4 openers…aren’t you?
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT OTHER?
REMMY:
Alright, you know what…I’m gonna pick this place…whatever the hell all this is…I’m just telling you that right now…and then maybe you can use your questions to answer mine…since of course you can’t just straight up tell me anything…
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT OTHER?
REMMY:
Oh yeah…OH YEAH…The biggest ‘Other’ of all time. ”It is certain!”
KNOCKOFF:
YOU THINK YOU’RE BEING CLEVER!
REMMY:
Alright…time for the real 20 questions. Let’s do this…
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT STRAIGHT?
REMMY:
No….no…well, sometimes…sometimes it goes on and on in lines…and then sometimes…it’s the exact opposite of what “straight” is…it curves and twists in ways that…that don’t make any sense…
KNOCKOFF:
DOES IT INVOLVE CONTACT WITH OTHER HUMANS?
REMMY:
I’m….starting to think…I’’m starting to worry that it doesn’t…I mean, I thought I saw my aunt the other day, with that…that thing’s weird tube hooked up to her belly button…but that’s impossible.
It honestly seems like it’s… just me down here…but I don’t know why anyone would do all this just for me…I’m just some art school dropout who works at a goddamn pizzeria…I mean, why bother?!
KNOCKOFF:
…DOES IT TASTE GOOD FRIED?
REMMY:
Uh…okay, I thought you were on the same page as me here, but…maybe this more random than I thought…
KNOCKOFF:
CAN IT BE PAINTED?
REMMY:
No…how would you? It goes on and on and on…honestly, you’d need, like, some kind of procedural algorithm to even begin to depict it…
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT AN ABSTRACT CONCEPT?
REMMY:
I mean…YES. If anything ever has been, yes…but…it’s really here. I’m really here…I can really see a blue, wire-frame basket that’s like six feet off the ground, filled with plastic gorillas and dinosaurs over there in the corner…there really is some kind of off-brand Easy Bake oven right here….[knocks it]
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT PLEASURABLE?
REMMY:
No…it sucks.
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT MANUFACTURED?
REMMY:
I…think it must be…I don’t think it’s possible for an office complex and a…a water park and a maze full of weird concrete rooms…and now a toy store to just…manifest like that…like, spontaneously….they’re not apples or grass or rocks, you know…but….but I guess I don’t know.
KNOCKOFF:
DOES IT LIVE ABOVE GROUND?
REMMY:
I…don’t know…it goes on for so long…I don’t know how it possibly could…I’m not sure if I’ve seen a window yet…well, a window to the outside, anyways…the ones in this toy store were just like plopped right there in the offices…and I don’t count the windows in that pit where I saw that…that Silverfish thing…i don’t know what that was, but it sure as hell was not the outside…Mostly it’s just been…so much concrete…so many old, yellow carpets…
KNOCKOFF:
WOULD YOU USE IT DAILY?
REMMY:
NO. Not if I had a choice…
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT TAUGHT IN SCHOOL?
REMMY:
No….hell no…I don’t think anyone…anywhere….knows about this…
KNOCKOFF:
CAN YOU PLAY GAMES WITH IT?
REMMY:
I’m starting to suspect that’s the only thing you can do with it.
KNOCKOFF:
DOES IT COMMUNICATE?
REMMY:
..why did you ask that question after “can you play games with it?”
KNOCKOFF:
DOES IT COMMUNICATE?
REMMY:
I think it does…
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT LOCATED IN SPACE?
REMMY:
…I think I might just be utterly goddamn unhinged, but no…I feel like it might not be…
KNOCKOFF:
CAN IT CHEER YOU UP?
REMMY:
…All I’ve eaten for weeks is bottled water and snacks left behind in office drawers…and that stale-ass sandwich platter left out from an office party that probably never actually happened…I think that question speaks for itself.
KNOCKOFF:
DOES IT GROW OVER TIME?
REMMY:
…I really sure’s hell hope not.
KNOCKOFF:
IS IT PART OF SOMETHING LARGER?
REMMY:
…It must be…it would have to be to justify its existence…why would it want me if it didn’t want something from me?
KNOCKOFF:
CAN IT BE USED TO TALK TO OTHERS?
REMMY:
…No. No, of course not. Didn’t you already ask me if it involves contact with other humans?
KNOCKOFF:
YOU THINK YOU’RE BEING CLEVER!
REMMY:
No, actually, I think I’m the farthest thing from being clever right now…in fact, I’ve never felt less clever in my life…
KNOCKOFF:
I AM GUESSING THAT IT IS LONELINESS.
REMMY:
…Yeah…I mean, I told you off that bat that it’s this whole place already…but I guess you’re not wrong.
KNOCKOFF:
CAN YOU FIND IT IN A HOUSE?
REMMY:
Man…you already guessed the answer. And, uh…wasn’t that the 20th question?
KNOCKOFF:
I AM GUESSING THAT IT IS THE COLOR PINK.
REMMY:
…I told you I didn’t want to talk about that.
KNOCKOFF:
I AM GUESSING THAT IT IS THE COLOR PINK.
REMMY:
…
KNOCKOFF:
I AM GUESSING THAT IT IS THE COLOR PINK.
REMMY:
Okay, you know what…I’m gonna go find that first aid stuff. I’m not doing this anymore.
KNOCKOFF:
YOU WIN!
[Remmy walks for a time.]
REMMY:
Yeah…you’re going back to 8-Ball mode.
Scene 2: Search The Toy Store
REMMY:
Okay, okay…if it were me, I’d probably put a first aid kit at the customer service kiosk…wherever a manager or somebody with a bit more authority than a cashier would hang out…
KNOCKOFF:
YES.
REMMY:
Alright. Customer service!
[Remmy hops over and shuffled through the papers]
REMMY:
Invoices…paperwork…paperclips…damn it..
Oh, oh, wait, what’s this?
An…an…empty first aid kit….shit….
KNOCKOFF:
MY REPLY IS NO.
REMMY:
Huh? What do you mean?
KNOCKOFF:
CONCENTRATE, AND ASK AGAIN.
REMMY:
Oh…you’re right…it’s not empty…is that a pill bug or?
KNOCKOFF:
VERY DOUBTFUL.
REMMY:
Yup…another silverfish…
KNOCKOFF:
Yes.
REMMY:
That’s all I’ve seen since I came in here…not a single ant, a spider just…just these silverfish now and then…
KNOCKOFF:
YES.
REMMY:
I wonder what this one was after in a medical kit…probably just exploring after chowing down on receipt paper and old sale flyers…
KNOCKOFF:
MOST LIKELY.
REMMY:
Do you think…this place…is like…where silverfish bugs…come from? Or something?
KNOCKOFF:
MY SOURCES SAY NO.
REMMY:
Yeah…I guess…these little guys are always wandering and alone…huh?
KNOCKOFF:
MOST LIKELY.
REMMY:
Maybe that’s all it takes to wind up here…
KNOCKOFF:
AS I SEE IT, YES.
REMMY:
Alright…well, I’m getting a move on then…I think this toy store might be part of a mall or a shopping plaza…no point sticking around if I can’t disinfect this damn thing…[pats]…Urgh god that feels like hell…
[The sound of distant video game play, and music]
REMMY:
Oh my…there’s…there’s a little kid…she’s…she’s playing one of the display consoles…
KNOCKOFF:
SIGNS POINT TO YES.
REMMY:
Aw shit…what if she’s trapped here too? But, but…what if she’s like…like Mr. Fitch?!
KNOCKOFF:
REPLY HAZY, TRY AGAIN.
REMMY:
Shit…
[Sounds continue.]
REMMY:
There’s…there’s a chance she could hurt me, right? It would be crazy to go talk to her…shouldn’t I just go look for medicine?
KNOCKOFF:
SIGNS POINT TO YES.
CANNOT PREDICT NOW.
[Remmy stands still for a time, then hops over the kiosk, and begins walking with purpose toward the sound of the game]
REMMY:
H…hey…
GAMER GIRL [very timidly]:
…hi.
REMMY:
You…you sound like Mr. Fitch did…you, uh…you aren’t gonna hurt me…are you?
GAMER GIRL:
…
[Keeps playing]
REMMY:
…I always thought the castle was the best stage too…you get more room to just do crazy stuff…
GAMER GIRL:
Yeah…it’s fun.
REMMY:
Do you…do you have a favorite character?
GAMER GIRL:
…the puffball.
REMMY:
…Jigglypuff or Kirby?
GAMER GIRL:
…Yeah, Jigglypuff.
REMMY:
Yeah, nice…she can be kinda tough to play though, she’s, uh…well, Kirby and Pikachu are broken in this game anyways cuz of—
GAMER GIRL:
Jigglypuff is a boy. [Sad.] All of the characters in this game are boys…
REMMY:
…uh, yeah…yeah, okay…I guess…I guess they never really said…
GAMER GIRL:
Yeah…
REMMY:
Hey, I, uh…I remember you, you know…now that I think about it, even though it was so…random…
I was walking through…Walmart, maybe? Maybe it was Toys R Us? And you…you were playing on one of the demo N64s they had out…and I remember thinking it was so strange because...I’d never seen a girl play smash before…especially alone.
Hey…you know what, though? Wanna know something cool? There actually is a girl in this game.
GAMER GIRL [Suspicious]:
…You’re just teasing me.
REMMY:
No, no–I’m really not. Do you know who this is?
[Remmy taps the screen.]
GAMER GIRL:
The robot…what’s it called?
REMMY:
Samus?
GAMER GIRL:
Yeah.
REMMY:
Yeah…except Samus isn’t a robot.
GAMER GIRL:
He’s not?
REMMY:
Nope. There’s a person in that robot suit! Is Samus connected to this controller?
GAMER GIRL:
Uh…yeah.
REMMY:
…Can I play for a sec? Samus used to be my main.
GAMER GIRL:
What’s “main?”
REMMY:
Uh, it’s kind of like…well, when you play a character so well and you feel so right playing as them, that…you kind of feel like you are them, you know?
GAMER GIRL:
That’s silly…I’m not Yoshi!
REMMY:
Yeah, but…it’s not that…it’s more like. When you tap the joystick and you feel the way they move…Yoshi doesn’t move like Mario or Kirby or Link…there’s a sort of…graceful-kind-of, floaty land every time Yoshi jumps, but he accelerates so fast when he leaves the ground…and eventually, your muscle memory just…it doesn’t just learn the way they move…it knows it…you feel like you when you play them…
GAMER GIRL:
Oh…hm….I think…I think I know what it means. I think I always knew that.
REMMY:
Heh…yeah…yep, I bet you did…
GAMER GIRL:
There’s still not a girl, though…
REMMY:
Oh yeah? Lemme show you something cool…
GAMER GIRL:
…Okay.
REMMY:
See that ray gun?
GAMER GIRL:
Where…
REMMY:
Left side of the screen.
GAMER GIRL:
Oh…oh yeah…
REMMY:
Go get it.
GAMER GIRL:
Okay…
REMMY:
Now…what happens when you fire the ray gun at someone?
GAMER GIRL:
They…they get all electric! Like…like “x-ray” seeing…you can see their bones!
REMMY:
Very good…
Now, I’m gonna make Samus ‘the Robot’ stand right here…and…on the count of 3…I want you to fire the ray gun at me. Then pause as soon as it hits me!
GAMER GIRL:
Okay…
REMMY:
3…2…1…Fire!
[Sound effect]
REMMY:
And…pause!
Now…look at Samus…you see how the robot suit looks like an x-ray when it gets hit with the ray gun?
GAMER GIRL:
Y…yeah!
REMMY:
What do you see?
GAMER GIRL:
Samus…that’s…Samus…you can see Samus’ body…Samus…is a girl.
REMMY:
You better believe it, kid.
Samus is from a game series called Metroid…my sister and I…we always liked the Metroid games as kids…a lot of outer space stories can be, um…big! And loud and flashy. Which is fun…but Metroid games…had this incredible sense of solitude even though you knew the world was so big and strange and—
GAMER GIRL:
What’s solitude?
REMMY:
It’s like…when someone puts you in time out…but in a good way. Samus was always lost in the deepest depths of some alien planet…exploring, digging, searching for something lost…and always alone…in the strangest lands…
You see, the original team that made the games Samus Aran comes from was…well, they designed Samus assuming it was probably a man inside the suit. Character design was different back then–with only a handful of pixels to work with, it..was pretty easy to throw together a “little guy” on the screen and not really know who they were, what they were…I mean, Mario wasn’t an Italian plumber at first, he was just “Jump man!” So people could still read all kinds of things into these little guys…And the team that made Samus, well…they wanted to give people who played the game a reward for beating it really fast…and somehow, they decided that would be that Samus would take the helmet off if you beat the game quickly enough…I guess…even then…even when games were that simple…there was an understanding that…people who played them brought something with them, you know? And…maybe they wanted to bring something away with them too…maybe they thought “hey, who’s in that little muscley-looking robot suit? What are they doing here, all alone on this desolate, miserable alien planet, tucked away in some godforsaken corner of the galaxy when there’s some kind of “Galactic Republic” out there they could probably be a part of, if they wanted to? But…Samus…didn’t want to…
The Metroid team made the decision so late in production, actually, that the direction booklet says “he” and “him” talking about Samus…but it also literally says “his true form is shrouded in mystery”...And, somehow…they decided…Samus…was a woman.
GAMER GIRL:
That’s…that’s…really cool…
REMMY:
Yup. And…I mean. And…she’s a big lady too! 6’3, 198 lbs. It’s canon–they put it in aa Power! My sister…Neysa…she used to love that. She wasn’t as much into the whole “Zero Suit Samus” thing, you know…well, you wouldn’t know, uh, you don’t need to know about that…but…god, she loved knowing Samus was even taller than her. Both the Higgins kids, we were, uh…we were kinda giants, haha…
And just like Samus, my sister…she also would’ve preferred to be fu–I mean…messing around the muckpits on some radioactive planet…scanning monster bugs and shooting lasers at space pirates…wandering through ancient ruins and lava rivers and…great, big expanses of life under water…to, well…whatever she was supposed to be doing…
GAMER GIRL:
…How do you know so much about video games?
REMMY:
Eh…I’ve burned too many hours on ‘em. Thought I wanted to make ‘em for a bit…ended up going into animation instead…and then…then I…just…didn’t…haha…
GAMER GIRL:
It would be cool to make video games…
REMMY:
You know…I think it’s starting to come back to me…it was so long ago…but…I’m remembering more about…the day I met you…
You were alone…but you weren’t playing the one-player mode…you were…you just had, like…the three other controllers plugged in…and you were just…messing around with the items…
a
That’s…what you’re doing right now…isn’t it?
GAMER GIRL:
…Yeah…
REMMY:
…I think the way you’re playing is pretty cool.
GAMER GIRL:
…the monkey likes the flowers.
REMMY:
What?
GAMER GIRL (Explaining things in that rambly, staccato, kid sort of way):
You have to give the flowers to the monkey, because that's what he likes…and he takes the boxes for you and throws them down below.
You have to give the pills to Luigi…cuz he’s not feeling good.
REMMY:
That’s…that’s really something.
GAMER GIRL:
And you have to give the tomatoes to Kirby, so he can eat them…
REMMY:
Oh yeah…I don’t think he can actually eat the things in this game, though, that’s really only in the traditional Kirby—
GAMER GIRL:
He likes them. You walk him over and then he eats them with the B button.
REMMY:
You’re right…what was I thinking…
…Hey…do you think I can play with you? I…think that would be fun.
GAMER GIRL:
…you can make the monkey take that box.
REMMY:
Yeah…alright, where should I put it?
GAMER GIRL:
Over here.
REMMY:
By the wall?
GAMER GIRL:
No, by the tower…
[Begins fading]
REMMY:
Oh, okay…oop, there’s a capsule, there’s a capsule!
GAMER GIRL:
I got it.
REMMY:
Cool, cool…there you go, Luigi, take your medicine…
GAMER GIRL:
It’s good for you, Luigi!
REMMY:
Yeah! Even if there’s a laser sword inside of it…
GAMER GIRL:
Yeah, he likes those too.
END.
Scene: Back in the Offices
[We hear a door open–Remmy is back in the offices.]
REMMY:
Welp…that was fun while it lasted…
KNOCKOFF:
YES.
REMMY:
Guess I can’t complain about a little bit of predictability. I mean, I didn’t think I was gonna get to play the OG smash in here…but turns out this place is full of surprises.
KNOCKOFF:
YES.
OUOOK GOOD.
REMMY:
Yeah…I guess you could say some of those surprises are good…maybe…
KNOCKOFF:
OUTLOOK GOOD.
REMMY:
Yeah…
KNOCKOFF:
VERY DOUBTFUL.
REMMY:
…what?
KNOCKOFF:
VERY DOUBTFUL.
VERY DOUBTFUL.
REMMY:
…What do you mean?
KNOCKOFF:
VERY DOUBTFUL.
VERY DOUBTFUL.
VERY DOUBTFUL.
REMMY:
You…think I’m being doubtful about…what?
[Silence]
REMMY:
You think…I’m doubting myself?
KNOCKOFF:
YES.
OUTLOOK GOOD.
REMMY:
Yeah…I mean…yeah I guess I knew what to say this time…I’d be lying if it didn’t make me feel like a million bucks when I saw the smile on her face with my whole Samus story…But…
KNOCKOFF:
VERY DOUBTFUL.
REMMY:
Yeah…I just…I just wonder sometimes…if I had known what to say back then…if I had the common sense or…maybe it was just plain common decency…to say the right thing…maybe…things would’ve been different…
KNOCKOFF:
CANNOT PREDICT NOW.
REMMY:
Yeah…not now…maybe not ever.
END.
